Krikke Motorsport: Oh, What a Feeling
The Krikke Motorsport team have achieved a lot over their 40-plus years in Sprintcar racing, such as Australian Championships, and on Saturday night at the Perth Motorplex, the team added another achievement, when Dayne Kingshott and the team scored their maiden feature race together.
After being brought into the Krikke Motorsport team less than 18 months ago to fill the void of border restrictions not allowing regular driver Kerry Madsen into the country to steer the WA # 2 Mobil 1 / Bunbury Toyota supported Maxim car, Kingshott, who had only limited previous Sprintcar experience, has shown plenty of promise since.
Over the past 18 months, Kingshott and the Krikke Motorsport team have proven to be a force to be reckoned with, and after multiple minor podium finishes and numerous near misses when it comes to wins, they cracked it for the win in last Saturday night’s fourth WA Speedweek Series round.
Prior to this historic night, Kingshott had recorded three consecutive top-six finishes in the opening three WA Speedweek Series rounds, which included the team’s first minor podium finish of the season via a second-place finish in the second round. Carrying consistent form into Saturday night’s event, he had started the feature race from position four. From the outset, Kingshott showed that he was in a winning mood by powering into top three and he got stronger and stronger as the 30-lap event wore on. He chased down leader Trent Pigdon by the middle stages, and by lap 21, he had taken control of the lead. Once out in front, he was never headed and went on to greet the chequered flag a popular winner.
As one would expect, Kingshott, who was the 66th different feature-race winner in SEG Series competition, was over the moon to get into the winner’s circle with the Krikke Motorsport team.
“To get my first win with the Krikke Motorsport team was both an awesome and emotional experience for the team and I,” expressed the 32-year-old Bunbury, Western Australia-based racer.
“Athough the team and I have come very close to wins over the past one and a half seasons, we have fallen short, so it’s a massive weight lifted off our shoulders to finally crack it for a win.
“Ryan (Krikke – team manager) gave me a wonderful opportunity 18 months ago to step into the country’s best ride, and it was a gamble for him, and I’m thrilled that I have been able to repay the faith he has shown in me.
“Another highlight for me is being able to do it with my best friend and the team’s crew chief Matt Cochrane, as we have been friends since we were kids, and we used to chat about racing and winning with a big Sprintcar team, so to actually achieve it is quite a surreal feeling.”
Krikke Motorsport team manager Ryan Krikke shared Kingshott’s joy and rated it as one of the best experiences of his time in Sprintcar racing.
“To be able to help give a driver their first feature race win is something really special and a huge thrill,” he enthused.
“I have known Dayne since he was a kid, and my family have supported him through his days in Junior Sedans and then when he stepped into Speedcars, and since joining the team he has fitted in very well.
“Dayne is not only a fantastic racer and a good bloke, but he also has a wonderful work ethic, as he is constantly putting in a lot of effort away from the track.
“As everyone knows, COVID-19 threw the world into disarray two years ago, so instead of just parking the team, I took a gamble of bringing a Sprintcar rookie into the team, and it’s a decision that I haven’t once regretted.”
Kingshott and the team, who sit second in the current WA Speedweek Series point standings and fifth in the current Maddington Toyota Series point standings, are now focused on this Saturday’s fifth WA Speedweek Series round at Ellenbrook Speedway.
One thing that Kingshott and the Krikke Motorsport team are determined to achieve during the remainder of their 2021-22 season campaign, and that’s to taste more feature-race success.
